During the perimenopause the most common cause of irregular periods is a hormonal imbalance, caused by decreasing oestrogens and progesterone levels. You may then get periods that arrive earlier or later than expected. You may get lighter or heavier bleeding than usual and your periods may be brief or neverending. Spotting (bleeding inbetween periods) and missed periods are a clear sign or symptom of a hormonal imbalance.
