Night sweats are our nightly visits from our sister, hot flushes – the medical term for night sweats is, ‘sleep hyperhidrosis’. Common symptoms of night sweats are intense and sudden heat, irregular heartbeat, chills, shakes and shivers, nausea, and headaches. As night sweats greatly disrupt sleep patterns, getting a good nights rest is sometimes impossible. Women who experience night sweats can go on to suffer insomnia, sleep disorders, difficulty in concentrating and/or focusing, anxiety and irritability, and high levels of stress.
Many of us have these symptoms three to ten years before menopause (in perimenopause). During menopause levels of oestrogens decline and fluctuate greatly, creating a hormonal imbalance, which is the primary culprit of night sweats.
