Postmenopause

The official definition of postmenopause is a permanent state of infertility that lasts for the rest of a woman’s life, beginning 12 months after her final period.

Once you have passed through perimenopause and menopause you will enter the stage called postmenopause. Menopause is the stage when 12 consecutive months have passed since your last period. The perimenopause is the years leading up to the menopause, when you experience hormonal fluctuations, irregular bleeding and menopausal symptoms. But truth be known, there is a lot more to postmenopause than meets the eye! So.., let me cut to the chase and give you the real definition of postmenopause.

What is the real definition of postmenopause?

Most women believe that when they are postmenopausal, ‘it’s over’ – the menopause, that is. Unfortunately, this is completely wrong, the menopause keeps going, it never actually stops. Hormonal decline goes on for the rest of your days, you never pass menopause, there is no after, there is no ‘post’, there is only a worsening of the situation. The ageing process is moving forward and is quickening pace, moving you one step closer to the age-related diseases that are so prevalent in the older population of today. Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and cancer do not have to be the final destination of life, there is now a new destination, one of health and longevity. There is restorative medicine.

In postmenopause you get used to living with those terrible symptoms such as aching joints, weight gain, sleeplessness and sleep disturbances, lack of energy, low sex drive, memory loss, brittle bones, a feeling of being generally unwell, and not being part of this world anymore! You get used to the side effects, or the withdrawal symptoms of hormonal loss, used to feeling awful, ill, not good, used to feeling invisible, used to being hard of hearing, or not seeing so well. That is the old definition, there is now a new definition.

When natural hormones are restored you begin to feel again, you become visible again. You regain your energy, your sex hormones will rev up again, and you will feel creative and sexy again. You will feel vibrant and healthy. You will walk straight, your joints will stop creaking; you will think straight, your brain will be sharp again, life will be as it once was; you will be able to cope with things much more easily. Life will be fun again. Bioidentical hormones give you your visibility back, you reappear with a lust for life, they give you your future. This is the new definition of ageing and postmenopause.

Ensuring healthy hormones beyond the menopause

In the perimenopause and menopause sections we discussed the benefits of restorative medicine and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. These benefits go far beyond correcting menopausal symptoms, they effectively protect us against chronic diseases such as, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, macular degenerative disease, cancers, diabetes, and all age-related diseases.

It is important to remember that the earlier you restore your body with the missing hormones, the better it is. Your body will suffer a lot less damage in the long run and you personally will suffer a lot less, as well. Restorative medicine is here for you, to prolong your youthspan and healthspan, through early detection, prevention, treatment and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders and diseases, not only for you but in men too. They too suffer symptoms of hormonal loss, age-related disease, and the passage of time called, andropause. The sooner you and they act the better.
